Trials Manager’s Report
Our 27th Trial ended up being a 3 day one and what a great 3 days we had! It’s been a while since we ran a 3 day trial, but this year the entry was very high again, especially in the TD stake (36 entries) so we started on the Friday. We decided to run the UD with 27 entries over the 3 days as well, which was a good decision as we lost a lot of land a couple of days before the start of the trial due to the dreaded sprayers. Luckily our regular farmers came up trumps and agreed not to spray some of their fields until after the trial, and we ended up with some great fields very close the base. The weather went from summer to winter in 48 hours, from very hot on the Thursday and Friday to very cold and extremely windy on the Saturday and Sunday, which did affect the tracking.
Huge thank you to the Banbury Dog Club team for pulling off another great trial. You have become like a well-oiled engine that jumps into operation the day before and keeps ticking over nicely until well after the last competitor has left the venue! I shall leave it to the judges to thank their helpers in the field, but would like to just say a special thank you to all the helpers behind the scenes: Steph Gordon and her team of helpers (too many to name individually!) put on fabulous all day breakfasts and snack lunches from early morning to late afternoon, Sue Lawrie cooked all of us helpers a very nice meal on the Friday, without the use of an oven! Shirley Simpson sorted out all the entries and competitor report times and Pat Sunderland helped me find suitable fields and did all of the escorting during the trial. Jane Webb ran the base and did all of the scoring for all of the 3 days.
Also special thank you to non-members Paul Adams for offering to lay the early TD tracks for all 3 days, Elaine for helping in the kitchen, and Ray Lea for giving up his TD entry to tracklay for the stake instead. It is very much appreciated.
So a very big thank you to all of the above. This trial would not have been so successful without all of your hard work and efforts.
Big thank you also to our judges: John Wykes (TD Nosework), Kate Wykes (UD Nosework), John Simpson (C/A) and Zoe Finlay (Intro and CD Stake). You all set nice straightforward tests, giving all competitors a chance to qualify. We ended up with a nice number of qualifiers: 9 in TD, 4 in UD and 1 each in the CD and Intro Stakes.
Congratulations to the winners: Margaret Robinson (TD), Chris Gregory (UD), Judith Perrin (CD) and Ruth Cahill (Intro) and of course all the other qualifiers. Thank you to all the competitors for entering our trial - we hope you enjoyed your day.
Finally, I would like to thank all the members (and also Kate!) who brought all those lovely cakes to the trial. They were stunningly beautiful and delicious and I am glad to see that the Great British Bake Off is rubbing off on our Trial!!

Thanks to Banbury and Carla for the opportunity to judge the C/A for my own club. The catering team are a pretty special bunch and Shirley and I were fed well. We had 3 dry - if a tad windy – days and many thanks to the competitors for accepting my decisions with grace.
1st Chris Gregory and DRIFTWOOD ALLEGRA, G Ret, B, 191, Q. I believe this was Dilly’s first attempt at UD and a good sendaway and full point jumps secured her qualification.
2nd Sarah Burroughs and TARNEDGE CLASSIC DANCER, Lab, B, 184.5, Q. Sympathetic handling got the most from this dog.
3rd Jennifer Speake and TIEKIEDRAAI ENCORE, GSD, B, 176.5, Q. Nice to see this team gaining in confidence.
4th Jenny Holt and BEELAHOLT BRYN, BC, D, 170.5, Q. A very sound control and agility enabled this qualification.
The Best UD Control award went to Ann Ketteringham and her young BC DREAGANTA LARK OF COLWAY. Well done.
1st Margaret Robinson and JUST ARRAN AT TRENTVALLEY, WSD, 216, Q. An experienced handler who got the very best from an excellent dog. Best TD C/A.
2nd Ann Clarke and TADMARTON EVITA, Lab, B, 210, Q. Another experienced handler with her young dog, who gave little away in the control round.

4th Steph Gordon and TADMARTON DAYDREAMER TILLY, Lab, B, 201, Q. Well done on getting your second TD COM.

Thank you to the Society for asking me to judge; I had a good time and was extremely well looked after, the hospitality was excellent. Thank you to David, Nicky and Anne for laying the tracks; Nicky tracklaid competitively for the first time and she did an excellent job. Thank you to Nicola and Sue for laying the squares; Nicola was also laying squares competitively for the first time and also did an excellent job. Carla, you’ve taught your club members very well.
Thank you to Elaine, Di, Steph, Sue and all the people in the kitchen for looking after all my catering needs, and thank you to Carla as trials manager. Thank you to Jane for running the base, even if you did have to miss out on an obedience show! Thank you to the farmers for the tracking land - without their generosity we would struggle to run working trials at all.
1st Chris Gregory with THRIFTWOOD ALLEGRA, G Ret, B, 191, Q
2nd Sarah Burroughes with TARNEDGE CLASSIC DANCER, Lab, B, 184.5, Q. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, I was lucky enough to judge this lovely dog at her last competition. Thank you, Sarah, for giving me that honour.
3rd Jennifer Speake with TIEKIEDRAAI ENCORE, GSD, B, 176.5, Q
4th Jenny Holt with BEELAHOLT BRYN, BC, D, 170.5, Q

Conditions varied tremendously throughout the day; those who were on early in the day stood the best chance of doing any good, unfortunately those who were on later in the day were really struggling and no qualifiers came from the end of the day. Nobody disgraced themselves, it was all down to conditions.
