Danbury, Open Trial
Judge: JEAN HOWELLS
Tracklayers: Friday - Penny Bann, Saturday - Lee Kane and Amanda
Search Stewards: Friday - Marilyn Pell, Saturday, Margo Brothwell
C/A Steward: Jan Vallack
My thanks to Essex 2000 for inviting me to judge the WD Stake at their Championship Trial. I had an enjoyable few days, without rain but it was very cold. Penny was a very versatile Trials Manager; not only did she run the trial, but also laid TD and WD tracks.
Thanks to the kitchen staff, Angela, Sue and Diane, for their hard work keeping everyone fed and watered. Thanks to my tracklayers - your hard work was very much appreciated. Also thanks to my square stewards, Marilyn on Friday and Margo on Saturday. Jan was my C/A steward on Friday and Saturday as well as running the base all week - many thanks, Jan.
There were 10 entries and 10 ran. None of the teams found the tracking easy but 6 managed to complete the track. I ended up with 2 gaining WDEx and 2 qualifying WD.
1st Betty Briley with JETRIL JIG, GSD, B, 181.5, Qual WDEx. Most of the marks you lost on the track were lost on one corner. Jig worked hard and luckily managed to sort it out and finished the track with both articles. 4 articles out of the square brought your marks up, as well as a good control round. Well done.
2nd Judy Meekings with LAURINCO RED SKYE AT WINDLEBROOK, Lab, D, 173.5, Qual WDEx. A good track but Skye was a bit hectic at times! Both articles off the track but only 3 out of the square. A good control round. Well done.
3rd Chris Brookesby with RAVENSBROOK MAID, BC, B, 158, Qual WD. A very nice track, gaining the best track mark, but unfortunately only one article off the track, 2 out of the square and trouble with the gun brought your marks down. A good control round with one of the best sendaways of the stake. Then Meg decided she couldn’t possibly do the long jump!
4th Sylvia Cook with MISTER MOSS AT GOLDOAK, WSD, D, 153, Qual WD. Moss found the tracking quite hard and only managed to find one article; only recovering 2 out of the square was also costly today. Other than heelwork he did a good control round, gaining the only full mark sendaway.

Many thanks to the Society for the invitation to judge and to Penny Bann for running such a well organised trial.
My tracklayers were Gary, Belinda, Penny, Alan, Jane and Paul, who all laid excellent tracks in the rather long rape. As anticipated, there were a few articles that had to be recovered by the tracklayers but all the teams worked very hard and we saw some excellent tracks over the six days. Quite a few teams completed the track but were short on articles, but this is the challenge of competing on crop.
The search squares were generally worked very well, with most teams coming off with at least three articles. Thanks to June for laying the squares and for stewarding the control (and for keeping me organised).
The farmers who support this trial deserve many thanks for letting so many people trample their crop! It seems as if these farmers can’t do enough to help Penny and her team.
The control was held at the base, which worked well for the competitors, spectators and the easy access. The field itself is ideal for control and we made use of natural boundaries and a well-positioned tree for placing the dogs behind for the speak. We saw some excellent control rounds; the standard in this stake is so high at the moment and it was such a pleasure to see some really well controlled sendaways. The marks are testament to the hard work and dedication of the competitors. Well done to you all.
May I just say though, that Penny, despite being Trials Manager and all that that involves, laid tracks not only in TD but also in WD. Maybe food for thought, we need to remember to offer help where we can so that Trials Managers don’t have to fill in the gaps.
1st Diane Ling, WTCh DEBEN LITTLE TOM, CDEx – TDEx, X-Breed, D, 212. Tom and Diane did a very nice track with three articles and a full point search, then went on to complete an excellent control round, only losing 2 marks. A well-deserved first place.
2nd Tony Lockyer, WTCh LAWNICK COME N GET IT AT HARTSHILL, CDEx – TDEx, GSD, B, 210.5. Tony and Isla matched the winner for nosework marks but were separated in the control by the sendaway. Very well done - as always, a consistent performance.
3rd Stevi Boyall, VANQUISH ULTIMATE EDITION, CDEx – TDEx, Lab, D, 207.5. Again, Stevi and Aston were on the same nosework marks as the first two placed teams; they did a creditable control round, just losing the odd marks. A pleasure to judge and it’s good to see Stevi back competing again.
4th Andy Baker WTCh SID THE LEMON SQUEEZER, CDEx – TDEx, PDEx, BC, D, 207. An excellent track, just losing one article in the search square (if only?); what a sendaway - full marks – just lost a couple on the speak. Well done, Andy, you are always a pleasure to watch and judge.
