Pailton, Open Trial
Stake: TD/WD Control and Agility
Judge: BARRY HARVEY
Stewards: 3 days, Zoe Finlay, 1 day, Joan Watkins
Thanks to Leamington for the invitation to judge at their January Open Trial. The Ex-Servicemen’s Club makes an ideal base; it was very convenient for the competitors to have the tracking ground and the control field adjacent to each other with plenty of hard standing for the cars in front of “the barns”.
The trial was managed by John Wykes, with Julie Skip running the base. Dot Levin once again looked after the catering and made sure that all the judges, tracklayers and helpers were well fed. Thanks to you all.
Zoe Finlay scribed for three days and was excellent company as well as a very efficient “note taker”. Joan Watkins stood in on Sat to allow Zoe to work her dog in the veteran stake. Thank you, Joan, for all your hard work and the efficient way in which you dealt with me and the competitors.
Thanks also to Sue Ashby who put up with Paula and me for five nights at her home. This saved us bringing the caravan and in the circumstances ensured that we had “dry” waterproofs at the start of each day.

Tracklayers: Pat Herbert, Roger Shrimpton, Maurice Cooke
Search Steward: Sue Jones
Many thanks to Leamington for the invitation to judge, and for arranging the weather so that I was not rained on too much while I was judging. John Wykes ran an excellent trial, but then he couldn’t do anything else with such a good team helping him – Julie Skipp, base steward, and Dot Levin doing the catering. Thank you all. A big thank you to Sue Ashby for providing us with accommodation and drying both me and my dogs out when necessary.
Tracking was on winter wheat but the fields were water logged and it was heavy going for the tracklayers and the search steward. Thank you all for your hard work and being such good company for the three days. I ended up with three competitors on the same mark, and as none was present on the last day places were decided on the nosework mark. Well done to those who qualified and better luck next time to those who failed; conditions were not easy.
1st Graham Brumpton, TAFFY GO LUCKY, X, (D), 194, Q. Well done Graham, Taffy made it look easy, only lost 2 marks on the nosework.
2nd RuthCahill, VOMKYNA BORUSS, GSD, (D), 194, Q. Bud looked very impressive tracking, but decided to be a bit naughty in the search square!
3rd CC Greater Manchester Police, TYGUARD CHILLI AT MANPOL, GSD, (B), handled by Ms Cath Phillips, 194, Q. Nice steady track and a full mark square.
4th Sheila Tannert’s STYPERSON EBONY, Lab, (B), handled by Stevi Boyall, 190.5, Q. Ebony worked really hard even though Stevi got stuck in the mud and nearly fell over.

Thanks to LDTC for the invite to judge TD nosework. An entry of 36 was rather a shock, but thanks to everyone for their entry We had the usual excellent organisation from the committee and my sincere thanks go to my tracklayers and square stewards, both of whom were first times, but did a great job.
The weather forecast promised us four days of heavy rain, but we were truly blessed with good weather, and when it did rain it was on my early tracklayers, not on me!! The standard was a bit mixed, with some dogs looking a little out of their depth, and others making it look easy! The best track was Donna Walker’s Dalmatian, FFIGLINA OBERON, but sadly he came to grief on the control field.
1st Kathy Ingham, ObCh RUSKATH OTHENTIC IMAGE, WSD, 212.5, Q. A daughter of Waggerland Fizz, this pair has already made their name in Obedience. No reason why they can’t go all the way in Working Trials. Beautifully handled – well done, Kathy.
2nd Colin Harrison, WAGGERLAND TED, WSD, 209, Q. Nice steady track from Ted, with an experienced handler helping him where necessary, but a slightly untidy square. Now qualified for Ticket, I believe – good luck there.
3rd Roger Shrimpton, CORNDON TAFF AT GRELGANNA, BC, 196.5, Q. First dog on the first day, a lovely accurate track; just had us worried on the last leg, but Roger had his wits about him and found the last article. Well done, Roger.
4th Jenny Holt, HULLATER BROCK, WSD, 191, Q. Not a lot wrong with this dog. Did some casting on straight legs, and quite a lot of mouthing in the square. Well done on your qualification.
June Reed, ESSEX GIRL, GSD, 188.
