Open Trial
Venue: Alnwick
Trial Held: 05 July 2009

CD, WD, PD Stakes

Stewards: Stevie Braithwaite and Jackie Suckling

Thanks to NECWTS for asking me to judge, and providing me with not one, but two great Stewards. Stevie Braithwaite laid all the search squares to perfection, while Jackie Suckling manned the stop watch. Then Jackie stewarded the C/A to perfection. Thanks to Trials Manager, Jacquie Hall, for running one of those Trials where the ‘helpers’ couldn’t do enough for you - and with a smile as well.

I told the eleven competitors that at the end of the day, they and their dogs should hopefully go home (qualifying or not) thinking, yes, I enjoyed that and I’d like to do it again. As usual, sit stays and/or jumps took their toll on some otherwise ‘just about there’ dogs, but all the dogs did an excellent down stay, and mostly excellent search squares. The almost knee high clover affected lots of the dogs - turning the retrieves into a mini search - and also, strangely, affecting the sendaways to a highly visible marker.

1st John Tait with PINFOLD FLY, WSD, B, DoB 1/11/05. John and his little rescue collie worked really well together. With Control 37.5, Jumps 19, Search/Retrieve 29.5 they qualified COM with 86 Points. Congratulations.

2nd Ms Susan Sentinella with SHADOWSQUAD ZOFIA, GSD, B, DoB 25/9/07. This team scored 46, 11.5, 28.5, so jumps took their toll, but very well handled nonetheless. Won the run-off with the 3rd placed handler. NQ with 86 Points.

3rd Ms Jo Moulin with DURABLE OF DINNINGTON, WSD, D, DoB 27/7/05. This team scored 48, 10, 28, so again jumps took their toll, with another very well handled dog. NQ with 86 Points.

4th Mrs. Rosemary Smyth with BEELAHOLT KEZZY BEAST, BC, D, DoB 19/11/07. With 43.5, 5, 29.5, it was again the jumps affecting a qualification from this very nice pair. NQ with 78 Points.

Have been waiting for this to appear since I sent it last year, shortly after the Trial - where has it been? No one knows. Fortunately, I was able to retrieve it from my records - so everything okay. Pat Nelson

Tracklayers: Julz Findeisen and Suzanne Plumb

Search Steward: Pat Hodgkins

C/A Steward: Julz Findeisen

15 entered, all ran.

Very many thanks to Jacquie Hall and her enthusiastic and dedicated team of North Northumberland DTC members who made such a good job of running this trial. Also to Jacquie and Keith for looking after us so well, it was very much appreciated.

The tracking fields were a dream and with these and the privilege of working with such a lovely, professional team of Julz, Suzanne and Pat, we had a very high standard of tracking, although I felt that some dogs were not so committed in the search. Just a reminder to a few handlers, a thank you to your tracklayer and search steward really does matter, however thrilled or disappointed you are. The lush clover of the control field gave us some interesting heelwork and retrieves, but most dogs and handlers coped well and kept a sense of humour while being brilliantly organised by Julz.

Finally, thank you to the competitors for such a good entry, it was a pleasure to judge you and best wishes for your future trials.

1st Glenys Page with BRIGLEN JOSS, BC, D, 195.5, Q. Lovely track with both articles, full mark square and jumps, only losing 1 on C/A with a brilliant sendaway, Ozzie bounding through the knee-high clover as if he was doing a 100yd flyball run!.

2nd Laura Bardwell with POLLGINA JACKSON MCBRIDE, Lab, D, 189, Q. Superb track, 89 with both articles, 4 from the square, though he spent a bit of time outside it. Another excellent sendaway - what a lovely boy.

3rd Tracey-Lee Sinfield with TRACEY’S LITTLE JEZABEL, X, B, 186, Q. Did very well on the track, specially when partridges flew up in front of her, but she soon got her concentration back and finished with 87, both articles and 4 from the square.

4th Chris Trevor with DESMOND DINGO, X, D, 183.5, Q. Des does look like a dingo and perfectly illustrates the instructions that dogs should work in a happy, natural manner, a lovely team. Very good track with both articles, 3 from the square and a full mark sendaway. Won the Seldomseen Trophy for best novice handler, well deserved.

Also qualifying:

Sarah Longbottom with GARDEN WILLOW, Lab, B, 182.

Moira Rogerson with XANDOAS CHANCE, BC, D, 177.5

Roseanne Leatham with BILKO’S GLORY, WSD, D, 176.5. The only one to get full marks for C/A, well done.

Geoffrey Padgett with BEN THE BLADESMAN, BC, D, 169.5

Fran Atkin with BLEDRI OF STEPASIDE, WSD, D, 163.5.

Tracklayers: Fran Mitchell, Tracey Park

Stewards: Avril, Bill Richardson

Criminals: Nelson Smith, Tracey Park, John Smith

Many thanks to North East Counties for the invitation to judge the PD stake. My stewards were Avril and Bill, and tracks were laid by Fran and Tracey – thank you all. All dogs tracked very, very well, and control was performed to an excellent standard, but unfortunately the jumps caught up with two of the dogs.

The manwork started with the quarter and location round three hides, which was well performed. The chase and detention, with a little distraction, was next – good! The escort followed, with no real problems. However, the test of courage was by far the worst performed exercise – only 20 points up for grabs here says it all. Finally the recall - and you either get it or not. All competitors made a good stab at this test. Very well done.

1st Terry Austin and GHYLLBECK NIMBOSTRATUS, Large Munsterlander, D, 301.5

2nd Lynn Davies and MISTER MISFIT MONGREL, X-Breed, D, 269

3rd Heather Patrick and SELDOMSEEN ZIGGY, WSD, B, 260.5
