Open Trial
Venue: Linwood
Trial Held: 04 March 2010

UD, WD, TD Stakes

Tracklayers: Adrian Quick and Jo Magness

Steward: Rosemary Turner

Many thanks to Poole and District DTS for the invitation to judge, and to Mary and Melvin, with all their helpers, for organizing such a friendly and efficient trial.

The nosework was on short heather, the weather good, and my tracklayers, Adrian Quick and Jo Magness, and search steward, Rosemary Turner, were superb, resulting in very good nosework scores from happy dogs.  Unfortunately, the control section was not so successful leaving us with just two qualifiers.

1st Margaret Robinson with JUST FRANKIE AT TRENTVALLEY, 196

2nd Lé Newman with STARDELL LEDA, 188.5

3rd Barbara Brown with GILDA EDGED WITH GOLD, NQ

I hope all the competitors enjoyed their day; I loved watching your dogs work with such enthusiasm.  Congratulations to the qualifiers, and to the others - you are so nearly there that success will surely come.

Thank you everyone.

Tracklayers: Glenys and Brian Page, both days, and Gavin Thompson, first day.

Steward: Val Thompson.

Many thanks to Poole for the invitation to judge the WD Open Stake. Melvyn and Mary Drewitt, as always, expertly headed their team of willing workers, which ensured a very pleasant two days judging for me - thank you.

Thank you to Glenys and Brian Page for tracklaying for me on both days, and to Gavin Thompson for tracklaying on the first day. I’m sure the competitors, as well as me, were all grateful that you managed to dodge the infamous New Forest ponies – well done!!

Val Thompson skilfully laid the squares and stewarded the C/A, as well as acting as my native guide on the Forest over both days. In addition Val and Gavin allowed us to use their land for the C/A – very many thanks.

The weather stayed dry for us but it was still wet underfoot in many places; however it was cold and very breezy most of the time. Tracking was on heather, quite dense in places, but most dogs (and handlers!) managed to cope and we saw some really nice nosework with nine teams in total qualifying in this section..

Nine teams competed on Wednesday and five on Thursday, with most turning in good control rounds. The agility saw only two teams gaining full marks, with four failing to qualify in this group.

1st Rosemary Turner with Danny Turner’s MALTESER MARY, CDEx, UDEx, Lab, B, Track 85+10+10, Square 35, Control 31.5, Agility 20, Total 191.5. After a hesitant start to the track, Nyla went round in style. A full mark square and also full mark sendaway and agility all contributed to this well deserved qualification and first place. Many congratulations.

2nd Marie Dixon with THE GODWIT, Crossbreed. 85+10+5, 33, 32.5, 19. Total 184.5. An all round competent performance from this nice little crossbreed which is steadily gaining in confidence. Congratulations.

3rd Adrian Quick with LAWINICK SLOW N EASY, CDEx, UDEx, GSD, D. 87+10+10, 30, 31.5, 14, Total: 182.5. Nothing slow or easy about this lively Shepherd! A bit of tidying to do, but nicely handled by Adrian. Well done.

4th Val Upton with GLENALPINE RAFFERTY, CDEx, BC, D, 89.5+10+10, 19, 30, 15, Total 173.5. An outstanding track from Raff who made it all look so easy. A shame about the other two from the square, but a nice qualification nonetheless.

Also gaining Certificates of Merit:

Kelly Chapman with TARNEDGE POSY, CDEx, UDEx, Lab, B, 171.5

Sheren Perez with MY BOY KAI, WSD, D, 168.5.

Tracklayers: Lynne Watkins, Charlie Taylor, Pippa Bentham, Mary and Melvin Drewitt

Steward: Barbara Brown and June Coutts

I would like to thank Poole for the invitation to judge the TD stake. Thank you to my tracklayers, Lynne, Charlie, Pippa, Mary and Melvin - you did a great job. Thanks also to my search stewards, Barbara (her first time stewarding) and June for putting up with me. To the ladies in the kitchen for the food out in the forest and the meals in the evening - you did a great job, thank you. Many thanks to Mary and Melvin for running the trial; I had a really nice few days judging on the forest.

1st Tony Lockyer, LAWINICK COME N GET IT AT HARTSHILL, CDEx, UDEx, WDEx, GSD, 208.5, Q. Well done, Tony, you and Isla worked really hard on the track and your patience paid off. Also a very nice tidy control round - you deserve the qualification

2nd Kevin Hill, VEKKA LADY, CDEx, UDEx, GSD, 184, Q. A nice round, such a shame you missed the last leg of the track and article, but nevertheless you deserve your qualification. Well done.

3rd Len Newman, SALLY BELL, CDEx, UDEx, WDEx, WSD, NQ. Sally did a super track but unfortunately missed the articles. Your control round was so improved - you should be very proud.

4th Les Allen, ANTILLI BAZKO, CDEx, UDEx, WDEx, GSD, NQ. A very nice track and search but unfortunately failed the control and agility. Keep trying, Baz is a lovely dog
