Many thanks to SWTS for the invitation to judge the Veteran stake at Lauder. It was a privilege to watch the older dogs showing us that they were more than capable of tracking on the flowering heather and rough grass of glorious Lauder Common – and all smiling while they did it. Thanks to Caroline Wright and her team at base, and to all the cake-makers – we were well looked after.
This was my first judging appointment, and I was grateful to have experience and good company on hand. Hilary kept me organised and brought chocolate (the perfect steward), and Jimmy, John and Steve laid the tracks and placed the articles just as I wanted them. Jimmy even went to check on my dog and stayed with the van until I could get back to where it was parked – thank you.
Heavy drizzle after overnight rain cleared to a warm dry day. We saw some super tracking from dogs whose ages ranged from 8 to 13 years young, thoroughly enjoying themselves. Articles were a child’s sock, length of cord and dolly peg (the laundry). The final article was a bag of dog treats – if the team didn’t get to the end of the track, the track layer put them on the last leg so that the dog could get the treats. 13 entered, 12 worked.
1st Gary Haim with LAWINICK STILL OF THE NIGHT, CDEx-TDEx, GSD 127.5. The first team to work as the drizzle stopped. Archie (9) only dropped 2.5 marks – a lovely track to watch. Well done.
2nd Andrea Lynd with REBARK BUBBLY PEG, CDEx-TDEx, Lab, 124. Peg (10) made sure Andrea followed her through the heather.
3rd John Wykes with KIPCROFT RED KYLE OF TARNFORCE, CDEx-TDEx, BC, 123. Kyle (8) worked his way round the track steadily and accurately.
4th John Tait with PINFOLD FLY, WSD, 114. Fly (11) worked last, and after keeping us all guessing on one corner, finished in style.
My thanks to all the competitors – it was a pleasure to watch your wonderful dogs.
