WD Nosework, TD Nosework, C & A

Tracklayers: Val Upton, Judy Meekings and Maggie Richardson.

Search Steward: John Reynolds.

This was my first judging appointment and so I would like to thank Chris Brooks and the committee of Surrey DTS for the invitation to judge the WD Nosework, and also thank the army of helpers who contributed to what was a most enjoyable and memorable weekend.

My thanks also go to Val Upton, Judy Meekings and Maggie Richardson for tracklaying both days and to John Reynolds, who laid all the search squares. It was reassuring to have such experienced team behind me.

The tracking was on grass and although the weather was chilly and breezy at times, it remained dry, and tracking conditions were good.

The articles on the track were a 2.5 inch square of green canvas and a piece of green rope. In the square were a 4” long piece of wood, half a playing card, a 3” x 1” piece of rubber and a 2” square of red carpet.

There were 17 entries but after three cancellations there were just seven competitors to work each day. The tracks were generally good, with four teams getting round on Saturday and five on Sunday. The squares were performed very well with nine teams getting all four articles.

Unfortunately there were only four qualifiers after the C/A.

1st Susanne Jaffa with AMBERSLADE BUCCANEER, ASD, D, 198. Buck displayed full commitment to the track, losing only one mark, followed by a full mark square. Congratulations.

2nd Margo Brothwell with TANGHAM LITTLE RYAN, X-breed, D, 194.5. Nearly came to grief on the track, but good handling allowed Ryan to recover well, followed by another full mark square. Very well done.

3rd Gill Lawrence with BEKKIS DULCIMER, BC, B, 181.5. Taking a short cut to the first article was costly but Toffee went on to complete the remainder of the track in style. Nice square. Well done.

4th Don Laskey with GEFNI BUMPER BUNDLE, GSD, B, 176.5. A nice steady track but Neve unfortunately missed the last article. A little distracted in the square but found all four. Well done.

Tracklayers: Tessa Shoolbred, Ron Davies, John Reynolds, Joyce Tibbetts

Steward: Caroline Ashford

Thank you to Surrey for inviting me to judge the TD nosework; to Chris Brooks for all her hard work as Trials Manager and to Stan Ford for finding the land. My special thanks to Caroline for her excellent company and for laying all the squares identically and giving each competitor an equal test. My thanks also to a very experienced team of tracklayers. We were all well looked after by Cathy and all her helpers in the kitchen. Thank you.

34 entered, 34 ran; 15 qualified in the nosework, 10 overall. We saw some excellent tracks during the three days of fine weather, with seven dogs finding all three articles, a 2” piece of leather, a 2” piece of rubber and 1.25” piece of carpet. The squares were less impressive, with many dogs mouthing. 13 dogs retrieved all four articles, a 5” piece of knotted green twine, a 7.5” stirrer, a 2” piece of garden hose and a 2.75 x 1.5” piece of black canvas.

1st Mary Prentice with MOUNTLOCHAN LAIRD OF O’LEYS, CDEx, UDEx, BC, D. Kiltie did an excellent track, but sadly missed a part of two legs. All four out of the square in fine style. Very well handled by Mary and a worthy winner. 90/30/34, Q, 207.

2nd Gary Haim with WAGGERLAND DILEMMA, WSD, D. A very competent team. Lovely attitude in the square, retrieving all four articles. A well earned second place. Well done. 95/30/29, Q, 205.

3rd Vana Moody with GLENALPINE SHEP, CDEx – WDEx, BC, D. Another excellent track and square. beautifully handled by Vana. Congratulations. 95/30/33, Q, 204.

4th Liz Hickman with WOLFHART TOUCH OF GOLD, CDEx – WDEx, GSD, B. Jay worked very hard and did both a lovely track and square. Well handled – well done. 96.5/30/34, Q, 203.5

Steward: Sue Henderson

Many thanks to Surrey for the invite to judge C/A; as usual, I had a great time. The trial was ably managed by Chris Brooks, supported by Stan Ford. Surrey always have a good band of helpers, and always new faces, which is great. The kitchen ladies did their usual excellent job, and I was really well fed.

To the important things - I judged some very good dogs, a few need more work for WD/TD, but all will make it soon. To Sue Henderson, a great job, did every thing I wanted and was very good with the competitors. She was great company and kept me in order.
