Venue: Newdigate
Trial Held: 24 February 2013

Steward: Judith Owen

Thank you to SDTS to come out of retirement and judge the Introductory Stake.  Thank you to Judith for being my steward and helping me set up the round, laying the squares and altering the jumps when necessary.  A big thank you to the ‘girls’ in the kitchen for the lunch.  Also thank you to Christine Brooks, Trials Manager, for her help.

Nine dogs entered, six were GSD’s.

1st Rosemary Turner with KHAMYSKER KALAMITY KATE, GSD, B, 99, Q.  A worthy winner.  Full mark control and agility and only lost 0.5 on the retrieve and search.  Excellent.

2nd Lee Payne with ASHLINDT METEOR, GSD, D, 97.5, Q.  Another full mark control round.  Well done.

3rd Stella Richards with GLENALPINE KASHEL, BC, D, 92, Q.  Another good round; well done.

4th Manda McLellan with GARTONHAUS BORA OF ASHLINDT, GSD, B, 88.5, Q.  Full mark control and agility.  Well done.

Tracklayers: Val Upton, Les Allen, Mark Lewindon, Sandra Lewindon

Square Stewards: Val Upton (Fri), Sue Hay (Sat and Sun)

My thanks to Surrey for their invitation to judge the WD Nosework, and to Chris Brooks for all her hard work as Trials Manager.  Thank you to a great team in the kitchen, led by Joyce Tibbetts and assisted by Judith, Sandra, Sally, Stella and Beryl.

A big thank you to my tracklayers.  The success of the tracks says it all (17 out of 19 dogs completed the track).  Val kindly stepped in as square steward on Friday; she and Sue laid accurate squares, giving the competitors the best chance.

Tracking was on short grass in bitterly cold weather.  22 entered, 19 competed and 15 qualified the nosework.  We saw some beautifully accurate tracking and some excellent squares, the latter only spoiled by mouthing.

1st After the judges’ decision, Tobie James and BOSCKOPH DYNAMIC, Boxer, D, 180.5, Q.  It was lovely to see a Boxer work, and Tobie handled him very sympathetically.  Fred did an excellent track, finding both articles, and retrieved four from the square.  Well done.

2nd Don Laskey and SHARDEE’S KOS, GSD, D, 180.5, Q.  Kos did a superb track, only losing two marks, and then four articles from the square in record time, only spoilt by mouthing.  What a lovely attitude!  Well done.

3rd Tony Baverstock and KINGSPRIDE AURORA, GSD, B, 176.5, Q.  May did a lovely steady track, only losing two marks, but sadly missed one article.  Another fast square, but again spoilt by mouthing.  A lovely attitude – well done.

4th Shirley Simpson and WESTMIDS KYRE, GSD, B, 170.5, Q.  Another excellent track from this lovely GSD bitch; Linx only lost two marks and found both track articles.  Unfortunately Linx lost confidence in the square, but still managed to find three articles.  I understand she has had a chequered history and, Shirley, you have done wonders with her.  Well done.

Also qualified:

Betty Briley and WAGGERLAND THIS IS IT, WSD, D, 169

Jenefer Le Mesurier and AFON ANDY PANDY AT BRYFFRWD, HWHV, B, 166.5

Judy Meekings and LAURINCO RED SKYE AT WINDLEBROOK, Lab, D, 166.5

Steward: Caroline Ashford

Thank you to Surrey for inviting me to judge the WD and TD C/A. I would like to thank Chris Brooks, Trials Manager, and all the ladies in the kitchen, whose excellent food was very welcome on the three very cold days.  A special thank you to my steward, Caroline Ashford, who volunteered and gave up her nice warm bed to stand on a hill in blizzards and very cold winds for the three days, and still managed to do a first class job of stewarding.  Despite the very cold conditions I saw some lovely work from the dogs and handlers and the results were as follows:-

After the judges’ decision:-

1st Tobie James with BOSCKOPH DYNAMIC, CDEx, 180.5, Q.  What a lovely C/A round from this Boxer.  With sympathetic and controlled handling, Fred did his mum proud; it was a pleasure to watch. Very well done.

2nd Don Laskey with SHARDEE’S KOS, CDEx, 180.5, Q.  Kos is full of potential; work on his C/A and he will go far.

3rd Tony Baverstock with KINGS PRIDE AURORA, 176.5, Q.  Unfortunately the long jump cost May first place today, otherwise she did a super control round.

4th Shirley Simpson with WESTMIDS KYRE, 170.5, Q.  Another lovely German Shepherd that did a nice C/A round.  Very well done.

Also qualifying WD:

Betty Briley with WAGGERLAND THIS IS IT, 169.

Jenefer Le Mesurier with AFON ANDY PANDY AT BRYNFFRWD, CDEx - UDEx, 166.5

1st  Barry Gilbert with GLENALPINE COSWORTH, CDEx – WDEx, 205.5, Q.  In Barry’s experienced hands this little Collie completed a lovely round.  A pleasure to watch, a well-deserved win.  Very well done.

2nd Sue Russell with GLENALPINE DANNY, CDEx – WDEx, 203.5, Q.  Another Glenalpine dog that did a lovely C/A round.  Very well done.

3rd John Simpson with FAR CANAL FOSTER, CDEx – WDEx, 203, Q.  I really love the relationship between John and Foster, it was a real pleasure to watch.  Very well done.

4th Linda Johnston with RAVEN HILL RORY, 200, Q.  After the tracking judge’s decision Linda was awarded 4th place, being on a higher tracking mark than Sandra and Kai.  Rory did a nice control round but the long jump was just a little too much for him today.

Marie Dixon with HYPERBOLIC ORBIT, 198

Tracklayers: Stan Ford, Tess Shoolbred, Val Upton and Maggie Richardson

Stewards: Rita Banfather and Don Laskey

Thank you to Surrey DTS for inviting me to judge the TD nosework.  Thank you to my tracklayers, Stan Ford for laying early tracks, Tess Shoolbred, Val Upton, and Maggie Richardson.

Thank you to my search stewards, Rita Banfather and Don Laskey, whose careful square laying must have contributed to the high success rate, and of course to all those who manned the base and provided food ,which was most welcome in the middle of bitterly cold days: Beryl Kimberley, Elizabeth De Unger, Joyce Tibbetts, Sally Baker, Sandra Lewindon, Judith Owen and Stella.  Thank you also to Trial Manager, Christine Brooks, for orchestrating the event.

Although on grass, tracking conditions were difficult; it was bitterly cold and very windy in some fields, with snow gusting much of the time.  All the dogs that got round the track had to work hard.  Special commiserations to Sue Hay, whose Tervueren, Ralph, was still working but ran out of time.  Squares were generally well done.  33 dogs ran.

1st GLENALPINE COSWORTH, CDEx-WDEx, BC, D, handled by Barry Gilbert, 205.5, Q.  Track 94, square 35.  A few blips on the track, followed by the only full-mark square - very tidy deliveries.  Congratulations.

2nd GLENALPINE DANNY, CDEx-WDEx, BC, D, handled by Sue Russell, 203.5, Q.  Track 95, square 28.  Danny continues to impress, very well done.

3rd FAR CANAL FOSTER, CDEx-WDEx, X-breed, D, handled by John Simpson, 203, Q.  Track 97, square 25.  A super Aussie/Collie cross, with great attitude.  Well done.

4th RAVEN HILL RORY, X-breed, D, handled by Linda Johnston, 200, Q.  Track 97, square 31.  Another super dog with the joint highest track mark, a joy to watch - well done.
