Open Trial
Venue: Ockley
Trial Held: 15 July 2007

Stakes: UD C/A and CD

Steward: Sally Baker

Many thanks to the Surrey committee for inviting me to judge the control and agility for UD and the CD stake. Thank you to Christine Brooks for running the trial so well, for keeping the competitors coming and doing all the scores. The field was behind the base, the food was as excellent as you always get at a Surrey trial and I had Sally Baker as an experienced steward to keep me company, which is a good recipe for a very pleasant weekend. Even the storms held off until Sunday afternoon after we had done the last stays, then it poured and the thunder did affect one or two of the last dogs to work.

We had 5 entries, of whom 2 qualified. Search articles were a tin lid, 2"x 2" scourer and a cork in long weedy ground. The sendaway was 60 yds downhill to a hedge. Congratulations to all the qualifiers.

1st     Margaret Harris with WILDKAP WOODY, BC, D, 93.5, Q. Only dropped one on the square and one in the control round - no long jump, but that will come. Congratulations on a good round that deserved to win.

2nd   Sharon Carter with IVYMOOR SOLID GOLD, Weim, D, 84.5, Q. Found it hard to concentrate in the square, only finding two articles, but a lovely control round compensated for that.

3rd   Veronica Hourihane with WAGGERLAND WITCH, BC, B, 83, N/Q. A very good square and control round let down by agility; a little more practice needed.

4th    Doug Tuggatt with NOVEM SUNBIRD, GSD, B, 78.5, N/Q. An otherwise good round also let down by the jumps.

25 entered, 4 qualified.

I set a straightforward round, with the sendaway 80yds to a hedge with a large oak tree as the target, but I was looking for dogs that went all the way happily, rather than the exact position, which resulted in successful confidence building sendaways for most of the dogs. As is usual in UD open the stays and agility let down the largest number of non-qualifiers.

1st     Pat Williams with SUNSHINE PIP, Xbreed, B, 196, Q. We all fell in love with this appropriately named bitch, who worked with such a happy attitude. Well done, Pat, and good luck in future trials.

2nd   Linda Newbold with COLLIEWOOD DANCING BRAVE, WSD, D, 188.5, Q. An experienced handler with a keen dog made this a beautiful round to watch.

3rd   Jacqui Tucker with WAGGERLAND WYRD, WSD, D, 187, Q. Another high drive sheepdog that was very nicely handled. Well done.

4th    B. Briley with JETRIL MUSTANG, GSD, B. Nice to have one GSD qualify, especially at her first attempt.   Well done.

My thanks to Surrey for the invitation to judge the UD Nosework. A big thank you to Lynne for laying all the squares, and to all the tracklayers – there were quite a lot. Thank you, Chris, for running a well organised trial. The food, as always, was great – thank you, Beryl and Dorothy.
